Over the years a variety of strange clauses have found their way into wills. Some testators have tried to prevent children and surviving spouses from marrying. Others have left their estates to their pets or to people they had met only once or twice.

George Bernard Shaw left money in his will to be used to expand the English alphabet to 40 letters.

In 1926, Toronto millionaire, Charles Vance Miller, left $500,000 to the woman who would give birth to the most babies over the next 10 years.

One person left the following message to his heirs: “Being of sound mind, I spent it.”

Carl McNeill, a 100-year old bachelor at the time of his death in 1995, left his estate to the Federal Government. The entire amount of $37,634.61 was to go toward paying off the national debt.
